   Fernfield Wines Eden Valley History

Fernfield Wines is a family owned and operated boutique winery and cellar door.  Mum, Bronwyn Lillecrapp is the Winemaker, Dad, Bryce Lillecrapp is the Grapegrower, daughter, Rebecca  is the wine marketer and son, Shannon is the cellar hand.  We have been making wine since 2002 and have won a medal for every wine ever made.  We make our wines traditionally, by hand picking our grapes, hand plunging the ferment and basket pressing the grapes from single vineyards.  We are a passionate family who  cares deeply about our wines and the experience you get at cellar door. Our wines are vegan friendly.

Our family, the Lillecrapp family bought land in the township and surrounds of Eden Valley in the 1800's. William Lillecrapp then,  subdivided the land and made it into the township of Eden Valley. In 1856 the first homestead Rushlea, in the Eden Valley township was built.  He built this for his 3 son's.  1 of them, Albert, lived at Rushlea until he was married and then built Fernfield up the road, due to the Bracken Fern that covered the landscape.  The homestead then became a home for "Wayward"City girls in the late 1800's.  Later it became a house for workers on the property.  Then ruins by the 1960's.  Bryce Lillecrapp, our current Grapegrower and 5th generation Lillecrapp,  restored the Homestead as a bicentennial project.  It is now our Cellar Door.   6 generations on, the Lillecrapp family have a Winery and the original homestead has been restored by Bryce and is now our Cellar Door in the heart of Eden Valley.

   Eden Valley

Eden Valley is a region of the world famous Barossa.  Eden Valley is on much higher ground than the Barossa Valley and is considered a cool climate region.  Quite a contrast to the Barossa Valley which is considered a warm climate region.

Who are Fernfield Wines Eden Valley?

We are a family winery that makes all our wines by hand.  Bronwyn, (my mum) went back to study at age 55 to study her Winemaking (oenolgy) degree at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga.  She was inspired to do this after Bryce, (dad) gave her a small Winemakers course at TAFE as a present.  She loved it so much that she just had to go on to further study.  Bryce has grown grapes on the property since the 1970's when wineries wanted to experiment with grapes on the Eden Valley floor.  Mum has gone on to win a medal for every wine she has ever made and 2 Trophy''s so far at the Barossa Wine Show.  Shannon, (my brother) is her assistant in the winery and does everything mum says.  They are a fabulous team and Bryce and I (Rebecca) do make the wine with them during vintage time.  We hand pick the grapes and then hand make them with so much care and cleanliness, that all you can taste is the real fruit that should be there when making wine.  Rebecca was happy singing around the Country, until, in 2002 the winery was to be built and she wanted to come back to the Barossa to become part of the new family venture.  So I went back to Adelaide University to study my degree in Wine Marketing.  We all have our own roles and have made a winning team.

   The Winery

Our winery was built in 2002 and that was the year of our first vintage. Grapes have been grown by Bryce and his father for over 50 years.  Our premium wines are handpicked and all wines are hand made and basket pressed, by the family. This allows concentration of flavour and is what makes our wines so special. Our Footstomping Shiraz is also crushed by the traditional Footstomping method before it is pressed. This generates maximum flavour, goodness, colour and tannin from the skins.

Bryce Lillecrapp:  Grapegrower and 5th Generation Lillecrapp

Bryce grew up and was born on the Fernfield property.  He attended Kings College and has worked on the land ever since.  Bryce planted the majority of grapes on the Fernfield property and maintains 60 acres of vines.  He suggested we build a winery after Bronwyn decided to go to University to study Winemaking.  Bryce is also a Past President of the Rotary Club of the Barossa Valley and current member.  He restored the first homestead built in Eden Valley, Rushlea Homestead.
